Extension is one of the core functions of the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. Tumaco. The Institute of Pacific Studies (IPS) is in charge of develop this function by establishing interactions between academia and society. Extension seeks to qualify science, technology, art and culture.

Currently, the Institute of Pacific Studies offers technical consulting services, advice, public policy evaluation, prospective exercises, project management and technological innovation.

These strategic lines have been raised as fundamental purposes of extension:
